Understanding your options
ADHD telehealth clinic or your own GP? Choose the care model that works for you
MySpecialistGP helps you understand the ADHD pathway and connect with independently practising clinicians: GPs, psychologists and psychiatrists, depending on who is currently listed. Your clinician sets their own fees and is responsible for your care.
Pay for what you need. No contract, no subscription.
The short answer
A centralised clinic bundles assessment and ongoing care into one organisation and one monthly fee. The independent-GP model through MySpecialistGP means you choose the GP, pay per appointment at the fee they publish, and the relationship stays with their practice. Every GP listed here works with the same Velluto Method, so the preparation is the same whichever GP you choose. Neither is better for everyone. The rest of this page sets out the differences so you can choose on purpose.
Why the model matters
The service model shapes how you book, pay and stay connected
A centralised ADHD clinic may suit someone who wants to join one organisation with its own onboarding and care model. You may prefer an ongoing relationship with a clinician who works through their own practice.
Both are legitimate options. The useful question is which model matches how you want to choose a clinician, arrange appointments and manage ongoing care.
Compare the models
What changes between the two approaches?
This comparison explains common service-model differences. Individual clinics and independent practices set their own processes.
| MySpecialistGP | A centralised ADHD clinic |
|---|---|
| Who you see. A clinician you choose from the directory, who works from their own practice. You know who you are booking before you book. | Who you see. A clinician the clinic allocates from its team. Depending on the clinic, you may see different people over time. |
| Where the relationship lives. With your clinician and their practice. If you never use this site again, nothing changes for your care. | Where the relationship lives. With the clinic. Your records, follow-up and reviews sit inside its system. |
| What you pay. Only the appointments you have, at the fee your clinician publishes. You see it before you book. MySpecialistGP adds nothing. | What you pay. Set by the clinic. Some clinics charge a membership or plan fee on top of consultation fees. |
| What you’re locked into. Nothing. No contract, no subscription, no minimum number of appointments, no cancellation fees. You can stop after a single visit and owe nothing further. | What you’re locked into. Some clinics ask you to join a plan or membership, or set a minimum commitment. Check the terms before you sign up. |
| Booking and payment. You pick a time on your clinician’s calendar here and pay their fee before the appointment. An unpaid booking is released after 24 hours. | Booking and payment. Through the clinic’s own booking system, on the clinic’s terms. |
| Before the first appointment. Everyone who books through this site completes a structured intake at home: questionnaires, an observer report, childhood evidence and your documents. The appointment goes on the assessment, not the paperwork. | Before the first appointment. Intake follows the clinic’s own process. |
| Consistency. Every GP listed here uses the same structured method, so you choose the GP without guessing at the process. | Consistency. Depends on the clinic’s internal process, which can change as its team changes. |
| Clinical decisions. Your clinician’s alone. MySpecialistGP takes no part in assessment, diagnosis or treatment. | Clinical decisions. The treating clinician or the clinic’s care team, under the clinic’s protocols. |
| Ongoing care. With the same clinician, through their practice, at their fees. | Ongoing care. Within the clinic’s model. Continuity depends on how the clinic is staffed. |
| If you move on. Your intake file is yours to take to any clinician you choose. | If you move on. Depends on the clinic’s transfer process. |
| Where it works. Telehealth or in person, depending on each clinician, and subject to your state’s rules on GP-led ADHD assessment. | Where it works. Depends on the clinic’s coverage and the same state rules. |
What you commit to, in plain terms
A centralised clinic usually charges a monthly platform fee that covers the assessment and ongoing care together. Some set a minimum term, commonly twelve months, and some cancel the subscription or waive part of the fee if the assessment does not lead to ongoing care with them. Read the terms before you sign up, and ask what happens to your records if you leave.
Through MySpecialistGP there is nothing to join. You pay your clinician’s published fee for each appointment you have, and that is the whole cost: no monthly fee, no minimum term, no cancellation fee. If one appointment is all you need, one appointment is all you pay for.
Whether Medicare applies depends on the GP: some bill items that attract a rebate, some do not. Their profile or practice will tell you. Each GP’s fee is published on their profile before you book.
Four pathways at a glance
The two-column comparison above is the choice most people are weighing. For the full picture, here are the four pathways Australian adults and families most often compare. Fees are on each GP’s profile and on our pricing page.
| Feature | GP through MySpecialistGP | Subscription telehealth clinic | Pay-per-visit telehealth clinic | Private psychiatrist |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| How you pay | Per appointment, at the fee each GP publishes on their profile. | One monthly platform fee covering assessment and ongoing care. | A fixed price for the assessment, then separate fees for follow-ups. | Per consultation, at the fee the psychiatrist sets. |
| What you commit to | Nothing beyond the appointment you book. | A minimum term is common. Check before you join. | The package you buy; follow-ups on the clinic’s terms. | Nothing beyond each consultation. |
| Who you see | The GP you chose, every time, through their own practice. | A clinician the clinic allocates from its team, which may change. | Often one clinician for intake and another for diagnosis. | The psychiatrist you were referred to. |
| Preparation | A structured intake at home before the appointment: questionnaires, observer report, childhood evidence and documents. | The clinic’s own onboarding, often in an app. | The clinic’s intake process. | Varies by practice; often forms sent before the appointment. |
| Ongoing medication and reviews | The same GP, where your state’s rules allow GPs to continue treatment, at their published fee per review. | Within the plan, by the clinic’s doctors. | Often a treatment plan handed back to your own GP. | Often shared with your GP once the plan is set. |
| Medicare | Depends on the GP: some bill items that attract a rebate, some do not. Their profile or practice will tell you. | A platform fee is not a Medicare item. Any rebate depends on how the clinic bills consultations. | Depends on how the clinic bills each service. | Rebates apply to eligible items with a valid referral. |
| Referral | None needed to book a GP listed here. State rules still apply. | Usually none; check the clinic’s requirements. | Usually none; check the clinic’s requirements. | A GP referral is needed to claim a rebate. |
| Availability | Depends on the GP you choose. Each profile shows their calendar. | Depends on the clinic’s capacity. | Depends on the clinic’s capacity. | Depends on the practice; ask when booking. |
| Where it works | Telehealth or in person, depending on the GP and your state’s rules. | Telehealth, within your state’s rules. | Telehealth, within your state’s rules. | In person or telehealth, depending on the practice. |
Five questions that decide it
- Do you want to choose your clinician, or have one allocated to you?
- Would you rather pay per appointment, or pay a monthly fee that bundles assessment and follow-up?
- Do you already have a GP you trust who could take over ongoing care? If so, the GP-ready ADHD pack lets you do the preparation once and take it to them.
- How much do you want prepared before the first appointment? Through this site the questionnaires, observer report, childhood evidence and documents are gathered at home first.
- Do your state’s rules let a GP assess ADHD and start treatment where you live?
There is no wrong answer. The point is to choose the model on purpose, knowing what each one asks of you.
When another pathway is the better fit
The GPs listed here assess adults and, where a GP offers it, children and adolescents. Some presentations need a psychiatrist, for example where conditions overlap or a GP decides specialist input is needed. A GP listed here will tell you if that applies to you and can refer you.
A centralised clinic may suit you if you want one organisation to hold the whole process and you are comfortable with its terms.
If you need urgent help, call 000, or Lifeline on 13 11 14.
Where the state rules fit
Whether a GP can assess ADHD and start treatment depends on your state. Some states allow trained or specialist GPs to do both, some limit GPs to continuing treatment that a specialist started, and some are still rolling out. That applies to a centralised clinic’s doctors as much as to an independent GP, so check the state guide before you book with anyone.

Choice, consistency, and nothing to lock you in
Three things usually pull against each other: choosing your own clinician, knowing what the process will be, and staying free to leave. Through MySpecialistGP you get all three at once.
- Choice. You pick the GP from their profile: location, telehealth or in person, fees, how they work.
- Consistency. Every GP listed here works with the same Velluto Method: the same structured intake at home, the same organised file arriving before the appointment, whichever GP you choose.
- No lock-in. No contract, no subscription, no minimum. The GP’s practice is your practice for as long as you want it to be, and your file is yours if you move on.
The clinical judgement is the GP’s, every time. The method only makes sure they start from a complete picture.
Is this model a fit?
The independent-practice model may suit you if you value:
- choosing a clinician based on their services, location and approach
- paying only for the appointments you have, with no contract, subscription or MySpecialistGP fee
- continuity with one clinician or practice
- practice-set fees without a MySpecialistGP patient subscription
- local or telehealth options where the clinician offers them
- structured preparation before consultation where available
Common questions
What stays with MySpecialistGP, and what stays with the practice?
Is MySpecialistGP a clinic?
No. MySpecialistGP is an education and clinician-connection platform. The clinicians listed on the site practise independently through their own practices.
Who makes clinical decisions?
Your treating clinician makes every clinical decision. MySpecialistGP does not diagnose, prescribe or direct your care.
Do patients pay a MySpecialistGP subscription?
No. There is no MySpecialistGP patient subscription. Your clinician or their practice sets and charges its own fees.
Who manages bookings and payments?
You book a time on your clinician’s calendar through this site. Their fee is paid online before the appointment, and MySpecialistGP does not charge you a fee or subscription. An unpaid booking is released after 24 hours. Changes and cancellations follow the links in your confirmation email.
Does being connected with a clinician guarantee treatment?
No. A directory listing or patient match does not guarantee a diagnosis, treatment or medication. Your clinician decides what is appropriate after assessing you.
Is telehealth available?
Telehealth availability depends on the clinician, their services and where you are located. Review the clinician’s profile or ask their practice directly.
Can I switch from a centralised ADHD clinic to a GP?
Yes. Ask the clinic for a copy of your assessment report and treatment summary, then take them to your own GP or a GP listed here. Whether they continue your treatment is their clinical decision, and in some states a GP needs a specific authority to continue ADHD medication, so check the state guide first.
Do I need a referral to see a GP listed here?
No. You book directly with the GP. Requirements vary by state, so check the state guide for where you live.
What happens to my records if I leave a clinic?
Australian privacy law gives you a right to access your health information. Ask for your assessment report and treatment summary before you leave; any GP taking over your care will want them.
Is the comparison on this page about a particular clinic?
No. It describes two service models. Individual clinics and practices set their own terms, so read them before you commit to either.
