Warm morning light on a verandah

The gap between knowing and doing.

Most adults who get an ADHD diagnosis knew something was off for years before they sought help.

Why people don’t act

The signs are usually present for a long time before anyone does anything about them.

Chronic disorganisation. Projects started and abandoned. A persistent effort cost that other people don’t seem to carry for the same tasks. Recognising a pattern in yourself and knowing what to do about it are different problems.

Fear stops a lot of people. Not irrational fear. Specific, reasonable questions: what happens if I do get diagnosed? Does it affect my job? My driver’s licence? How will I think about myself?

Nobody answers those questions upfront. So people sit with it.

The system makes it worse

Psychiatrist waitlists in Queensland run 6 to 18 months.

A private assessment costs $600 to $1,600 before Medicare. Most people don’t know that a trained GP can assess and diagnose adult ADHD, or that the diagnosis carries the same clinical and legal weight as a psychiatrist’s.

And then there is the ADHD itself. Difficulty initiating tasks is a core symptom. The thing preventing you from getting help is the same thing you need help for. That is not a character flaw. It is how the condition works.

What we believe

Good medicine should not require you to be a certain type of person.

Organised. Persistent. Well-connected. Wealthy enough to wait. Those should not be the entry criteria for an ADHD diagnosis.

Technology should do the admin. Collect your history before the appointment. Chase the observer report. Prepare your GP. Remove the friction that stops people from taking the first step. The appointment should be about medicine: you and your GP, working out what is going on and what happens next. My Specialist GP is built to do that.
